Amber Heard calls new Johnny Depp interview 'shameful,' accuses him of 'psychological abuse'

Johnny Depp’s November cover story for British GQ — wherein he dismisses ex-wife Amber Heard’s claims of domestic abuse — has been criticized by those who say it glamorizes an alleged abuser and doesn’t challenge Depp’s denials. Heard herself is now speaking out.

“It is outrageous that GQ never spoke to any of the multiple witnesses to Mr. Depp’s physical abuse of Ms. Heard prior to publishing its article,” lawyers for the Aquaman actress, who divorced Depp in 2016, say in a statement issued to Page Six.

“If GQ had done even a basic investigation into Mr. Depp’s claims, it would have quickly realized that his statements are entirely untrue,” the statement reads. “Mr. Depp has blatantly disregarded the parties’ confidentiality agreement and yet has refused to allow Ms. Heard to respond to his baseless allegations, despite repeated requests that she be allowed to do so.

“Mr. Depp is shamefully continuing his psychological abuse of Ms. Heard, who has attempted to put a very painful part of her life firmly in her past. One need only look at the physical evidence to draw the proper conclusion.”

Much of the interview, which took place at the 55-year-old actor’s French estate, saw him casting doubt on Heard’s claim that he threw an iPhone at her head in a May 2016 incident. He also questioned the existence of a facial bruise, allegedly caused by the iPhone, Heard photographed.

“Why didn’t that person [Heard] speak to the police?” he adds. “I mean, they spoke to the police, but the police saw nothing and they offered her an emergency medical technician. She said no. Police see nothing on her. Police see nothing broken in the place, no marks, and then they offer her an EMT to have a look at her and she says no and I don’t know if it was the next day or a couple of days later, but then there was a bruise. There was a red mark and then there was a brown bruise.”

Depp also said that the domestic abuse allegations had tarnished his reputation, and he was “fighting” back on behalf of his two children and the legacy he plans to leave them.

The British GQ interview is just the latest clash between the two actors, who wed in 2015. An August court filing for Depp’s libel suit against the British newspaper The Sun — which called him a “wife-beater” — included claims that Heard had physically attacked him during the relationship. He has also accused the actress of defecating on their bed. Heard’s lawyers have denied both allegations.
