‘American Crime’ Episode 3 First Look: ‘Dying’s Easy to You’
American Crime is never an easy show to watch (as Yahoo TV’s Critic-at-Large Ken Tucker noted in his review of Season 3), but it’s also a showcase for some of the best performances on TV — from repertory players including Felicity Huffman and Regina King, both of whom have received Emmy nominations for their roles. (King won in 2015.) One returning American Crime player who deserves accolades as well is Richard Cabral, who stars this season as Isaac Castillo, the head of a migrant crew at a large farm in North Carolina. In this exclusive clip from Sunday’s episode, Isaac has an intense talk with Coy (Connor Jessup), a white drug addict who works on the crew — and who regales Isaac with tales of almost dying multiple times from overdosing on heroin. “It just got to be regular,” Coy tells Isaac blithely, adding that paramedics would always come to save him with a dose of Narcan.
Isaac doesn’t hide his disgust. “When they were running crack in the city, they didn’t have any Narcan,” he says. “They let the Mexicans die. They let the blacks die. Heroin comes into the suburbs and all of a sudden they got magic powder.”
Also in Episode 3, Luis (Benito Martinez) arrives at the Hesby Farm and receives important information about his missing son, while Coy witnesses a horrific incident that changes his entire perception about life in the field and confirms his dark new reality.
American Crime airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
