After noting that her eponymous, hour-long broadcast launched in 2008 and is the longest-running daytime program on the cable news network, Mitchell said that she wanted to return to her journalistic roots.
“After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most,” she said, “more connecting, listening, reporting in the field.”
She went on to say that her change in role would take place after the 47th president takes office. She’ll remain NBC News’ chief foreign affairs corespondent and chief Washington correspondent, and she’ll continue to report during breaking news coverage and during important political events.
“My goal will continue, as it has always been, to bring you, our viewers, the major newsmakers shaping our world and country right here on MSNBC,” she continued. “Come some time next year, you’ll see me in your living rooms still, on mobile devices and other platforms, perhaps in your hometowns and cities, still asking the questions to get the answers that you deserve.”
