Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh's Chemistry Is on Full Display in Clip from “We Live in Time” (Exclusive)

'We Live in Time' is in theaters Oct. 11

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh's chemistry shines in a new clip from We Live in Time.

PEOPLE has an exclusive clip from the romantic drama that shows how Garfield's Tobias and Pugh's Almut first meet. Tobias wakes up in a hospital and sees Almut in a hallway after she accidentally hit him with her car.

Almut introduces herself to Tobias as she explains that she is the person who ran him over; though she apologizes for the incident, he immediately apologizes and appears smitten.

The two "are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives," reads a synopsis for the film. "Through snapshots of their life together — falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family — a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation."

Pugh, 28, first confirmed she and Garfield, 41, would star in a movie together during a March 2023 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, weeks after she and Garfield presented together at the 2023 Oscars.

The movie's stars were on hand with their director John Crowley (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch) at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for its world premiere on Sept. 6.

"Chemistry is a really tricky thing to pin down, you know? You can't really make it happen, you can just invite it to enter into the room," Crowley, 55, told PEOPLE at the premiere.

"They didn't know each other, they're quite different kinds of actors, but on day two of rehearsals, I began to see flashes of lightning in a bottle, as it were, and it began to get very exciting. I think what it was was that they would just fall into each other's presence."

"That sounds mystical, but actually it was about the level of connection between the two of them. One would say a line in one way and the other one would react in very particular way, and that began to develop and their trust in each other in the moment," he added.

"For me, the whole film is about what happens between them literally and the space between them, and when they locked in on that space, it really began to cook and become electrifying."

We Live in Time is in theaters Oct. 11.
