Andy Richter (‘The Masked Singer’ Dust Bunny) shares secret Marlon Brando stories and his ‘thrilling’ Dick Van Dyke moment
Season 12 of “The Masked Singer” continued Wednesday night on FOX, with the Group B contestants belting out classic hits on “Sports Night.” Following the studio audience vote, Dust Bunny became the first singer eliminated (and fifth overall this season), revealing actor and comic Andy Richter. Watch our video interview above.
“It was a challenge that I made to myself to do something that I’m not entirely comfortable with,” Richter tells Gold Derby. “I’m not a singer. I don’t know music. When they would be like, ‘You’re a little flat,’ I don’t know what that means. When they’re like, ‘Hit the C note,’ that’s a hundred dollar bill as far as I know. It was really fun. It’s a great staff on the show. They were so encouraging that I really was surprised when I got voted off first.”

Following his performance of “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, Dust Bunny was eliminated from the competition. Although he lost Group B, he still walked away a winner for having Dick Van Dyke as his Masked Ambassador. “That was a complete surprise to me and a real, true thrill,” he says. “In the Mount Rushmore of television comedy, Dick Van Dyke has gotta be one of the people up there. That was really flattering and great, and made it even more cool.”
Richter also shares stories about his never-before-seen work with another Hollywood legend, Marlon Brando. “It was from ‘Scary Movie 2,’ he explains. “The movie opens with an ‘Exorcist’ parody. He came in and he was not very healthy. He had pneumonia, he had an oxygen mask. From what I heard, he would take jobs and they’d say they were going to pay him $10 million and then he would show up for one day just to get like $4 million and then not be able to finish. That’s kind of what happened. He came in for a few hours, he was not well. But, I did get to act with Marlon Brando and sit alone and run lines with him. It was a pretty surreal experience.”
Richter can currently be heard on his weekly podcast “The Three Questions” and “The Andy Richter Call-In Show” on SiriusXM radio.
