Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas in the first trailer for Pablo Larrain’s ‘Maria’
Netflix has pulled the curtain back on “Maria.”
On Thursday, the streaming platform released the first teaser for Pablo Larrain’s biographical film about famed opera singer Maria Callas, one of the most acclaimed performers of her lifetime. Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie stars as Callas and is already widely predicted to score a Best Actress nomination for her performance.

Here’s the official boilerplate from Netflix: “Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in acclaimed director Pablo Larrain’s operatic MARIA. The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.”
“Maria” debuted at the Venice Film Festival before quickly screening at the Telluride Film Festival. It will next play at the New York Film Festival as part of that event’s slate before also showing as part of the London Film Festival.
Early reviews for the film have been mostly favorable, with Jolie’s performance hailed as a standout. The project is an unofficial trilogy capper for Larrain, who previously directed “Jackie” (about Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (about Princess Diana), two other films about famous women of the 20th century. Both “Jackie” and “Spencer” landed lead actresses Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart, respectively, nominations for Best Actress.
Jolie is an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted.” She was last nominated in 2009 in the Best Actress category for her performance in 2008’s “Changeling.” She also received the Jean Hersholdt Humanitarian Award from the Academy in 2014.
“Maria” is directed by Larrain from a script by Steven Knight (“Spencer”). Ed Lachman, a three-time Oscar nominee who was nominated this year for Larrain’s “El Conde,” is the film’s cinematographer.
“Maria” will have a limited theatrical release starting on November 27. Netflix will start streaming the title on December 11.
