Anna Faris does a reverse 'Overboard' in first trailer for remake
Nothing could replace Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in Overboard. But, with the arrival of the remake‘s first trailer, Anna Faris (Mom) and Eugenio Derbez (The Nutcracker and the Four Realms) are sure gonna try to bring something new to the ’80s classic.
In the original film, Hawn played a spoiled heiress who’s cruel to the struggling carpenter (Russell) working on her yacht. But when she gets amnesia, the blue-collar guy gets revenge by convincing her that they’re husband and wife. In the remake, these roles are reversed.
Faris plays Kate, a single mom who works odd jobs while she tries to make it through medical school. As a cleaning lady, she encounters Leonardo (Derbez), a playboy who drags her through the proverbial mud. The tables turn when Kate sees Leonardo’s amnesia as an opportunity to change her life around and exact poetic justice.
We see a few nods to the original in the new Overboard trailer. After a hard day on the job, Leonardo comes home and crashes on the couch in a fit of garbled talk. This mirrors a scene from the original when Hawn’s character, having been forced to do yard work, sits in a daze as she mimics the jerking noise of the chainsaw: “Buh buh buh buh buh.”
Eva Longoria also features in Overboard as Kate’s best friend and boss at the local pizzeria — another one of Kate’s side hustles. Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher co-wrote and co-direct the film.
“I’m just crazy about that movie,” Faris told EW of the original Overboard. “I love Goldie Hawn. Her performance is so sublime and delicious — and the chemistry with her and Kurt!”
