Anne Hathaway Gave Kelly Clarkson a Shoutout for the Sweetest Reason
Alexa, play "Breakaway."
Anne Hathaway is getting in her feels to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. To celebrate everyone's favorite princess, the actress shared a sweet clip on Instagram that not only gave fans a heavy dose of nostalgia, it also included a shoutout to America's sweetheart, Kelly Clarkson, who performed the song "Breakaway" for the movie's soundtrack.
"Happy 20th anniversary to #PrincessDiaries2 and @kellyclarkson’s Breakaway!" Hathaway captioned the post. The carousel also included snapshots of co-stars Chris Pine, Callum Blue, and Julie Andrews, as well as beloved director Garry Marshall.
Of course, fans know the 2004 film was a major part of Hathaway's rise to stardom in the early '00s. She played Mia Thermopolis, a girl from San Francisco who learns that she's the heir to a fictional European kingdom, Genovia. The sequel saw her hunting for a husband because of an antiquated Genovian law, which is where Pine came in.
During an appearance on Sunday Today, Pine opened up about his experience on the film, saying that he earned $65,000 for the project. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was the first time he'd starred in a feature film.
"It was like they had just told me I’d made $50 million," he said. "It was absolutely earth-shattering. I just remember distinctly knowing in that moment that my life had changed somehow, even though [$65,000] at the end of the day turned out to be about $15,000."
Back in November 2022, rumors started to swirl about a possible third installment in the franchise. Andrews, however, may not be involved. In a March interview with Today, she said that "sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone."
"There was dialogue about it," Andrews said. "Nothing had been realized. And I think I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now. I can’t be sure. I’d be very happy if we did do another one. But I don’t expect to."
But Hathaway is hopeful—and so are fans.
“We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place," she said in an April 2024 interview with V Magazine.
