‘Aquaman’ Director Says His Movie Will Be Less Serious Than ‘Batman v Superman’
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might be crushing it at the box office, but it’s being crushed by critics for its super-serious, super-dark tone. If you like your DC comic-book characters but hate the movies’ look and sound, there’s some good news. Aquaman will save the day. That’s right, Aquaman. The Justice League member and soon-to-be star of his own movie will be given a less-grim treatment, according to James Wan. The Furious 7 director will be helming the 2018 film that will star Jason Momoa and said he is looking to have some fun.
He told IGN at WonderCon, “Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it’s fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character — but at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it.” Wan’s interview with /Film would suggest he’s gearing up for a romp. The filmmaker said, “Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.”
Here’s the thing: Wan is a guy who knows how to have fun; in Furious 7 alone, he had cars parachuting out of a plane, a car driving through three skyscrapers, and the Rock doing “the Rock” things. So when he says he’s going to do some cool things with Aquaman, we can trust him.
