Are These The Saddest Holiday Commercials Of All Time?
The holidays are a time of giving, sharing and weeping like a newborn. Well, that’s the case if you watch any of these European commercials that each year vie to make people bawl in all of the 23 officially recognized languages of the EU. This year’s entry is a strong contender for winner of the No Cry Challenge.
Allegro, a Polish online auction site similar to eBay, produced this commercial that features an old man’s quest to learn English. And like an Upworthy headline, when you find out why, you won’t be able to hold back the waterworks.
Last year’s ad from Edeka, a German supermarket, also used an old man to make us weep with the regret that we don’t call our parents constantly.
British retailer John Lewis and supermarket chain Sainsbury’s try each holiday season to best each other in the doleful department. John Lewis’s 2015 “Man on the Moon” campaign has been viewed over 28 million times.
Sainsbury’s entry last year was “Mog’s Christmas Calamity” and featured the titular cat accidentally ruining and saving a holiday feast and has over 34 million views on YouTube.
