Ashton Kutcher says Mila Kunis gave him the best advice on supporting women in a post-#MeToo world
Ashton Kutcher shared his perspective on the #MeToo movement Wednesday during an onstage conversation at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference in San Francisco — and he said it came straight from wife, Mila Kunis.
Interviewer Jordan Crook pointed out that Kutcher has worked extensively in both the entertainment and tech industries, where he’s invested in multiple companies and created venture funds and a digital media company.
“You know, the best advice that I got relative to this entire thing came from my wife, and she said, ‘Men have had hundreds of years to solve this problem and to talk about this and figure it out,’ and it’s probably the best thing, at this point, for me to just shut up and listen for a little bit,” Kutcher said. “I actually think that anything I say is ultimately a hollow action and that the only thing [there] is for me to do is to actually do, and anything else in-between is bulls***. So hire more women, get busy making sure that there’s equal pay for women within organizations, make sure that the companies that we invest in are thinking about this problem on day one, and continue to tell stories about the extraordinary women in history and in the world and going forward. I think … that’s my baseline of what needs to be done.”
Kutcher, 40, wasn’t finished.
“It’s incumbent upon me to have my investment fund be 50 percent women, to increase the number of companies that we fund that are female founded,” he said. “It’s incumbent upon me to make sure that my foundation — well, my foundation’s already 80 percent women and every position in the C-suite [for top executives] is all women. My media company is over 50 percent, it’s like 70 percent women and all the people in the C-suites are women in my media company.”
The #MeToo movement has directly affected Kutcher. In December, Danny Masterson, Kutcher’s former co-star on his current show, The Ranch, and from his and Kunis’s days on That ’70s Show, was fired after multiple women accused him of rape. Masterson denied the accusations, and Kutcher has continued to star in the Netflix show.
When he’s not working on a set, the father of 3-year-old daughter, Wyatt, and son, Dimitri, 1, is investing in tech companies such as Airbnb, Spotify, Uber (which had its own problem with women), Warby Parker, and Nextdoor.
