Avril Lavigne makes first public appearance in two years: Where has she been?
Avril Lavigne returned to the red carpet — and promised that you’ll soon be seeing and hearing more of her.
For the first time in two years, the “Let Go” and “Sk8er Boi” singer, 33, made a public appearance, stepping out for Friday’s Race to Erase MS benefit at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Having time out of the spotlight looks good on her, and she was practically glowing. Styled by Phillip Bloch, she wore a black dress by Galia Lahav, but her hair seemed like a nod to old Hollywood with those Veronica Lake waves.
Lavigne, who is on the board of Race to Erase MS, was happy to be back in the spotlight, posting several photos of herself on her social media — from the event as well as getting ready with her jewelry designer pal Caryn Alpert.

Lavigne dropped out of the spotlight after her marriage to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger ended in 2015. But like her song, the split was “Complicated.” While she filed for divorce, it’s unclear if it was ever finalized. Yet they remained close, even stepping out on the red carpet together after their split. In fact, her last time on the carpet was with Kroeger at the 2016 Juno Awards in her native Canada on April 3, 2016.
In 2015, the star also revealed that she had been diagnosed with Lyme disease and was bedridden for five months. Last September, she said it had been a “long recovery.”
But she was looking good on Friday — and she shared that she’s putting the finishing touches on a new album, which had been set back due to her illness. (Her last was her 2013 self-titled album.) She’ll be handing it off to her label in a few weeks and she says it will be out later this year.
“It’s a really powerful record,” she told E! News. “I’ve been working on this for three years. I can actually say this time I’m going to be done with this album in two weeks and I will put it out this year. I’ve been writing songs that are really just powerful and true and honest and sincere, and I think people will really be able to relate to it. I’ve gone through a lot of personal stuff in the past two years, and so I’ve really drawn from that.”
She shared a health update as well, saying, “I haven’t even been able to come to one of these events for a few years. I’ve been tucked away and hibernating and healing, and it’s very up and down. Everything is brighter when you go through an experience like that. I’ve always been a really grounded and grateful person, but it changes a lot. The simple things in life are what mean the most, really. I’m happy to be here, happy to be supporting.”
And it showed.
