Avril Lavigne's new boyfriend is the son of a Texas billionaire: A look back at her 'complicated' romantic history
Avril Lavigne‘s new man has been identified — and let’s just say he’s no run-of-the-mill “sk8er boi.”
For a few months now, the twice divorced singer, 33, has been spending time with this guy, and E! News reports that he’s Phillip Sarofim, the son of Texas billionaire Fayez Sarofim. Fayez Sarofim & Co. is one of the largest and oldest privately owned investment firms in the United States, and its chairman of the board and co-chief investment officer, who is Egyptian, is reportedly worth $1.49 billion. The senior Sarofim, whose nickname is the Sphinx, owns a stake in the Houston Texans football team.
Lavigne and Phillip, who is one of five children (meaning he’s probably more of a millionaire heir if the family funds got sliced up), have been hanging out since at least March. That’s when they were snapped holding hands as they exited Madeo restaurant in L.A. They were also snapped shopping, because what else do the sons of billionaires do?
Jokes aside, E! News reports that they met at a dinner party and have been hanging out “quietly” ever since, going “back and forth to each other’s home bases.” For the record, Phillip’s home base is probably the $16 million home he bought in Beverly Hills last year. Not a bad home base.
So what’s known about Phillip? Whelp, he was previously married to Lori Krohn — and it’s unclear exactly when (if?) they divorced. In a funny turn of events, Phillip’s dad, who is 89, married Lori’s mother, Susan Krohn, who is decades younger than her husband, in 2014. So his former mother-in-law is his stepmother.
Lavigne, who has been stepping back into the spotlight after her second divorce and a bout with Lyme disease (there’s new music coming, she swears), has had her own “complicated” romantic history…
Ryan Cabrera
Most recently, Lavigne was linked to singer Ryan Cabrera, who we haven’t written about so much since like 2004. But the rumors were quickly put to rest, also by E! News, after it was determined that the old friends were simply pals and roomies. He had ended a romance with a live-in love — and holed up with the Canadian singer while he figured out his next steps. Those have since been figured out: He rekindled his romance with old flame Audrina Patridge.
J.R. Rotem
Lavigne’s last real boyfriend was record “superproducer” Jonathan “J.R.” Rotem, whom she was linked to for several months last year. It was fleeting — much like his fling with Britney Spears in 2007.
Chad Kroeger
Before that, Lavigne was of course married to Chad Kroeger of Nickelback fame. They became engaged after a month together, and had the fancy wedding — with her infamous black dress — in the south of France. They separated in 2015, but stayed friendly after, leading to buzz of a reconciliation, but it never panned out. It remains unclear whether they’re officially divorced — but that’s the same with Phillip and his wife (so Hollywood).
Brody Jenner
Remember when she was with Brody Jenner? During their two years together, they wore a lot of black and trucker hats — when you could tear her out of her own Abbey Dawn styles. He’s gearing up to tie the knot himself.
Deryck Whibley
And that brings us to Mr. Avril Lavigne No. 1, Deryck Whibley. She befriended the Sum 41 singer when she was 17 and he was 23 and they officially started dating two years later. They were married in 2006 — and you know how that ended. They split in 2009 and were officially divorced a year later before she hopped on the Brody train.
Lavigne has such loyal fans that we doubt they ultimately care whom she she ends up with as long as she’s happy — and as long as she finally finishes her long-promised new album. Seriously, dude, don’t come in the way of that.
