‘Awards Chatter’ Pod — Sofía Vergara on ‘Griselda,’ Her Brother’s Cocaine-Related Murder and a Possible ‘Modern Family’ Reunion
Sofía Vergara is an actress best known for playing trophy wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC sitcom Modern Family from 2009 through 2020. During that run, the New York Times described her as “practically a loaded semiautomatic aimed at those who don’t think beautiful women can be funny,” and she was nominated for four Emmys, four Golden Globes and two SAG Awards; was named one of People’s 50 most beautiful people in the world; and topped Forbes’ list of the highest-paid actresses in the world.
Four years after Modern Family came to an end, TV consumers have been discovering that the 51-year-old Colombian can more than hold her own in a dramatic part, too. For her tour-de-force turn as Griselda Blanco, the Colombian drug lord also known as the “Godmother of Cocaine,” in the Netflix limited series Griselda, which dropped back in January, the actress — who had never before done drama, played a person who actually lived or performed in her native language — has garnered some of the best reviews of her career, and is once again in the Emmy conversation.

Over the course of this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Vergara discusses how, quite unintentionally, she first broke into the entertainment industry at the age of 17, while still living in Colombia, and then, quite intentionally, moved to America at 25; her rollercoaster journey through the TV business to Modern Family, and the criticisms that she faced in some circles for her work on that show; the reasons, some incredibly personal and painful, for why she spent years pursuing the part of Blanco; whether or not she plans to pursue more dramatic parts in the future; and if she would be open to participating in a Modern Family reunion; plus much more.
