Axl Rose Is Not Enjoying Those Fat Axl Memes
Famously mercurial Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose has a bone to pick with the internet. TorrentFreak reports that the rock legend has been sending out DMCA takedown notices requesting the removal of an “unflattering picture” of him. This picture shows a physically out-of-shape Rose jumping during a 2010 show at Winnipeg, Canada. This photo became the Fat Axl Meme, where users pair the image with terrible food puns and Guns N’ Roses references.
“Copyright image of Axl Rose,” says the notices issued by Web Sheriff, a U.K.-based anti-piracy company. “Please be advised that no permission has been granted to publish the copyright image so we cannot direct you to an authorized example of it.”
Rose’s copyright infringement claim is a bit of a long shot. In 2013, Beyoncé‘s publicist asked BuzzFeed to removed “unflattering images” of her Super Bowl performance — and that post still exists. Michael Jordan reportedly isn’t a fan of the Crying Jordan meme, but it’s probably still going to be used in a lot of LeBron James face swaps in the next couple of days. Rose’s chances of a Fat Axl-free world are slim if celebrities with as much clout as Beyoncé and Jordan can’t bend the internet to their whims. (h/t Stereogum)
