B.J. Novak Admits His Relationship With Mindy Kaling Was A "Romantic, Toxic, Boundaryless Mess"

B.J. Novak opened up about his past romance with Mindy Kaling — and I kind of get why it didn't work out now.

Over the weekend, B.J. honored Mindy with an eight-minute speech at the Producers Guild of America Awards, where she was receiving the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television.

While B.J. definitely had a lot of nice things to say about his BFF Mindy, he also reflected on their "tumultuous" romantic relationship.

"We were in love with each other, and we were reckless idiots," B.J. said of the time the couple dated while working on The Office.

He continued, "The two of us would argue about all of these things forever, grinding the writers room to a halt until we got too upset, and we'd go to our respective offices and slam the door, where we would continue arguing over AOL Instant Messenger."

B.J. even went so far as to call their relationship a "tumultuous, romantic, toxic, boundaryless mess."

And when The Office producers realized what had developed between the coworkers, B.J. says, they actually encouraged them to be together and gave them more scenes with each other.

"There was no way out but through. We made it work or didn't work; we made it through," B.J. said onstage.

Although B.J. and Mindy's romantic relationship wasn't a good fit, the pair clearly still have a lot of love for each other.

"She cares so much about everything, and I care so much about her," B.J. concluded.
