He’s part of a lineup celebrating Black Music Month.

Babyface brought along singers Tank, Chanté Moore and Avery Wilson to share the moment.

He didn’t do a lot of talking – he had to fit 40 years of music into a half hour – but he did share why he writes so well for women and discussed working with Whitney Houston and why the lyrics in the chorus of “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” are so sparse.

Babyface, who as Kenneth Edmonds, graduated from North Central High School, has 12 Grammys and 50 nominations, including wins for Grammy for producer of the year every year from 1996 through 1998.

He’s produced or written hits for the likes of Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Usher, Beyonce and Madonna; and his LaFace Records label (co-founded with L.A. Reid) launched the recording careers of Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Pink and Outkast.

The show can be viewed at NPR Music YouTube page and npr.org.
