Barkaa has formally announced her second EP, entitled ‘Big Tidda’. It serves as the official follow-up to her debut EP, 2022’s Blak Matriarchy, and will again be released via Briggs‘ label Bad Apples. The seven-track release will feature both tracks that the Malyangapa-Barkindji rapper dropped earlier this year: March’s ‘We Up’ and June’s ‘Preach’, as well as new collaborations with fellow Indigenous artists Kobie Dee, Say True God? and Minty.

In a press statement, Barkaa described the new EP as “a celebration of Blak joy, the importance of Blak love and just feeling yourself”. “I showcased my culture with Blak Matriarchy, but with Big Tidda, I am taking you for a walk through the streets where I grew up: the Housing Commission estates of Southwest Sydney,” she said.

“I create music for everybody, but mostly with my sister girls in mind. I want people to connect to my music and be like: ‘That’s my track. That’s my story. I can relate to that. I feel that. I’m going to big-note myself today. I’m going to be confident today. I’m going to make amends to my family today. I’m going to take accountability today.’ That’s what Big Tidda is about.”

To celebrate the release of Big Tidda, Barkaa will hold three launch parties for the EP. The first is an all-ages event on Sunday afternoon at 27 Project Studios in Penrith. The next one happens on Friday, August 30th – the EP’s release date – at the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville.

Finally, there will be a party held at Melbourne tattoo parlor Roxxi’s Poolroom on Saturday, September 7th – where flash tattoos inspired by Barkaa’s music will be available. Tickets for these events, as well as pre-orders for Barkaa’s new line of merch, can be purchased from Band T-Shirts.

Since the release of Blak Matriarchy, Barkaa has toured extensively across Australia – including performances at Groovin’ The Moo, Vivid LIVE, Party In The Paddock and the inaugural SXSW Sydney.
