Show medics saved Bear Grylls from potentially life-threatening bee sting while filming
Bear Grylls had a close call while filming his new show, Treasure Island. The famed survival instructor, who is severely allergic to bees, was stung in the Pacific Ocean. Brain surgeon Mano Shanmug-anathan, who is also starring on the show, talked about the scary moment.
"I think that Bear is an impressive guy. He understands his tasks at hand and knows what he has to achieve," Shanmug-anathan revealed to the Daily Star. "The irony of Bear the survivalist being stung, having the potential of an allergic reaction, and needing to be treated with an EpiPen, was a bizarre moment."
The incident, Shanmug-anathan added, "was crazy!"
The emergency occurred on the first day of filming as Grylls was transporting contestants to an island via boat. After being stung, the television star apparently tried to continue filming, but medics feared potential anaphylactic shock and raced on board with an EpiPen.
Grylls discovered he was allergic to bees in 2008 when he was stung cutting some honeycomb from a nest. Speaking on Born Survivor, he exclaimed, "The irony is, out of all of the massive, lethal, aggressive, man-eating crocs, snakes, alligators I've dealt with over the years, the one that gets me is a bee."
In 2015, he shared a throwback photo on Instagram of his swollen face after the altercation with the insect.
Grylls has yet to comment on the most recent incident.
