‘The Bear,’ ‘Masters of the Air,’ and More to Accept 2024 AAFCA TV Honors
The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has announced the winners of the 6th Annual AAFCA TV Honors, with “The Bear,” “Masters of the Air,” and “Genius: MLK/X” winning multiple categories. Taking place on August 24 at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, the invitation-only event celebrates distinguished achievements in television and streaming.
In addition to the competitive categories, the event will have special achievement award honorees who will be feted for their stand-out contributions. Those include actor Glynn Turman, winner of the Legacy Award, who recently starred in the Hulu series “Black Cake”; comedian Michelle Buteau, winner of the Trailblazing Award, who both created and stars in the hit Netflix comedy series “Survival of the Thickest”; and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Caroll, winner of the Salute to Excellence Award, who created “All American,” “All American: Homecoming,” and “Found,” three popular series currently on the air.

Starz’s “Power” Universe, composed of the original “Power” series and its prequel and two spinoffs — “Power Book II: Ghost,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” and “Power Book IV: Force” — will receive the Impact Award. And Tubi, one of the fastest-growing streaming platforms, which has invested in original content targeted to Black audiences, and has partnered with The Black List to develop scripts from underrepresented storytellers, will receive the Ally Award.
The AAFCA TV Honors, introduced in 2019, celebrate outstanding achievements in television and streaming, with a special focus on entertainment representing the Black diaspora. “The 2024 AAFCA TV Honors class is a powerful testament to the exceptional range of Black talent in television today,” said AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson, who will preside over the event. “From the legendary Glynn Turman, whose six-decade career continues to inspire, to rising stars and innovative storytellers, this group exemplifies excellence across the board.
