Netflix has officially announced the return of the Emmy Award-winning anthology series “Beef,” ending months of speculation. On Tuesday, the streamer revealed Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny will star in the next series from creator and three-time Emmy Award winner Lee Sung Jin.

Season 2 of the show will focus on a young couple (Melton and Spaeny) who witness an “alarming fight between their boss and his wife (Isaac and Mulligan), triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.”

Original “Beef” stars and Emmy winners Steven Yeun and Ali Wong return as executive producers, along with Emmy winner Jake Schreier. The second season will run for eight episodes.

The first season of “Beef” debuted in April 2023 and became an immediate critical sensation for Netflix, eventually dominating the movie/limited series categories at the Emmy Awards. The show won Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Limited Series Actor for Yeun, Best Movie/Limited Series Actress for Wong, and Best Movie/Limited Series Writing and Best Movie/Limited Series Directing for Lee. Overall, the series won eight Emmy Awards.

The show focuses on a wealthy woman (Wong) and a downtrodden man (Yeun) who cross paths during a road rage incident that has lasting ramifications to their lives and relationships.

Lee has always talked about wanting to extend “Beef” beyond its first season, even if it meant leaving the characters played by Yeun and Wong behind. “I’m kind of open to it all,” he told Gold Derby in 2023. “I do really love the world that Season 1 created, I love Danny and Amy and all the supporting cast, so I’d be down to explore that – and I’d be down to explore new beefs.”

Earlier this year, Deadline reported Melton and Spaeny were in discussions to join the next set of episodes, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. But by the summer, Deadline revealed Isaac and Mulligan were in discussions for the series. Now, all the actors are finally confirmed.

Melton broke out on “Riverdale” before winning critical acclaim in the Netflix film “May December.” Spaeny has been on the ascent for a while now, fully breaking out last year as the lead in “Priscilla.” She recently appeared in the box office hit “Alien: Romulus.” Isaac and Mulligan are two of Hollywood’s most respected actors, and the pair have worked together previously in “Drive” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
