Bella Hadid is 'very proud' of Ariana Grande for speaking up on body comments: 'Be kind'

Bella Hadid is standing by Ariana Grande following the singer's emotional plea on TikTok for people to stop scrutinizing her – and everyone else's – physical appearance.

The model, 26, shared Grande's video to her Instagram Thursday to reiterate Grande's message.

"You never know what someone is dealing with mentally or physically. Disease or depression. Grief or heartache. You just don’t, and you will never know until you walk in a day in their shoes," she wrote.

"Instead of unsolicited advice or opinions, judgement or aggression, just try to offer a helping hand and be kind."

Hadid added that there is "always a reason" for the way people look and feel and to "be soft" because you don't know what someone has been through.

"Instagram is not real and we need to look deeper and consciously remind ourselves that each of us are just human beings trying our best."

She finished her post by thanking Grande for starting the "important" conversation that will "help so many."

"I am very proud of you," she said.

What did Ariana Grande say?

In a vulnerable post on TikTok Tuesday, the "Positions" singer, 29, addressed fans that were voicing concern about her thinner figure, telling them that "there are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful” and that her previous physical appearance was "the unhealthiest version of my body."

"I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy," she said. "But that in fact wasn’t my healthy."

Grande reminded her followers that "you never know what someone is going through" and to refrain from commenting on other people’s bodies.

"Be gentle with each other and with yourselves," she said.

Experts agree the body comments should stop

Grande joins a chorus of celebrities, including Adele and Jonah Hill, who have also asked social media followers to refrain from commenting on people's bodies. And experts agree. Here's a few reasons they previously shared with USA TODAY as to why this scrutiny is harmful:

  • Commenting on someone's weight reinforces the belief that someone's appearance is the most important thing about them.

  • You never know what someone is going through and there is a myriad of potential medical reasons for weight loss or weight gain.

  • Comments, whether they are skinny- or fat-shaming, can lead to serious mental health issues, like lower self-esteem.

  • Your body is no one else's business.
