Berlin: Media Luna Acquires ‘Little Wing’ from Oscar-Nominated Director Selma Vilhunen (EXCLUSIVE)
BERLIN — International sales company Media Luna New Films has acquired four projects, including Finnish coming-of-age drama “Little Wing” from director Selma Vilhunen, whose short film “Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?” was nominated for an Academy Award in 2014.
Road-movie “Little Wing” is produced by Kai Nordberg and Kaarle Aho at Making Movies, whose “The Fencer” was a Golden Globe nominee for foreign-language film this year and shortlisted for the Oscars in the same category.
“Little Wing” centers on Varpu, a 12-year-old girl who doesn’t know who her father is. The relationship between her and her mother, Siru, is good and warm, but there’s a flaw: Siru doesn’t treat Varpu as a child, but as her equal. When the two fight, Varpu steals a car and drives across the country to Oulu, in Northern Finland, to find her father.
Media Luna also acquired Uruguayan movie “The Moderns,” directed by Mauro Sarser and Marcela Matta, which features music by Carlos Gardel, one of the leading figures in the tango world. The pic is about three couples in their thirties who are facing the choice between parenthood, professional achievement and sexual freedom.
Also picked up are Chema de la Pena’s “Live for Me” and Manane Rodriguez’s “Breadcrumbs.” In Mexican pic “Live for Me,” three people get the same call telling them there’s a chance to finally obtain the long-wanted kidney transplant they have all been waiting for. A bond forms between them.
Spain-Uruguay pic “Breadcrumbs,” starring Cecilia Roth, centers on Liliana Pereira, who returns to her home country to face her past, which included kidnapping, torture, rape and years of imprisonment under a military dictatorship, as well as the loss of custody of her only child.
