The Best Beauty Looks from the September 2024 Emmy Awards

If you're saying to yourself, “Didn't we just have the Emmy Awards?” you're not alone, nor are you crazy. There was, in fact, an Emmy ceremony back in January, having been postponed as a result of last year's SAG/AFTRA and WGA strikes. And now, we're getting back to our regularly scheduled programming—pun entirely intended—with the Emmys returning to its usual spot in September. And who are we to complain about another opportunity to admire the glam of the TV stars strutting down the red carpet?
Coming right on the heels of MTV's big award show, the (second) 2024 Emmys bring a very different vibe than the VMAs—one that's typically less over-the-top and edgy and more classic and elegant. But that doesn't mean the stars won't make creative choices with their hair, makeup, and nails. And that's why we're here: to keep track of all the best beauty looks among the attendees, the looks most likely to set new trends for the rest of the year and beyond, the looks we'll be talking about until the next Emmys (which will probably be an entire year away this time).
Selena Gomez
We knew Selena Gomez was going to look incredible when she hit the red carpet—she's nominated for Only Murders in the Building, after all, so this is her moment. And, yep, she killed it. We're obsessed with her super-long, middle-parted hair, styled by Marissa Marino to be as smooth as can be, but nowhere near flat. And whoever said flipped-up ends are reserved for bobs and lobs simply didn't have the vision to see how adorable it looks on long hair like Gomez's.
Marino applied the original Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Styling Créme from roots to ends on towel-dried hair and brushed through with a paddle brush. “I blow-dried the hair straight and then applied the Fekkai Brilliant Gloss Glass Hair Anti-Frizz Oil Serum from roots to ends and brushed through," says Marino. Then she curled just the ends with the Kristin Ess Hair 1 1/4” Curling Iron.
Hung Vanngo kicked off her makeup look with an SK-II skin-care lineup, including the Facial Treatment Mask. The superstar kept her makeup soft, with glossy, beige-pink lips—Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm in Nearly Petal—perfectly fluffed brows, and the wispiest winged liner we ever did see, thanks to Perfect Strokes Longwear Gel Eyeliner.
Quinta Brunson
Abbott Elementary star and Emmy winner Quinta Brunson heard we needed some serious style on this red carpet, and she served it up with the utmost confidence. Her hair appears to be directly influenced by Josephine Baker's iconic hairstyle: short, slick, with a swooping curl up front, achieved by stylist Alexander Armand with Maui Moisture Flexible Hold + Coconut Milk Curl Foam Mousse and the Olivia Garden Titanium + Ion Professional 1.25" Curling Iron. Her smoky shadow and liner, which match her black dress, draw all the attention to her eyes. Her long, pointed nails, crafted by nail artist Temeka Jackson, feature a combination of Aprés Nail colors—Could’ve, Should’ve, Would’ve and Girl Dinner—for the sheer, pink base and are topped off with crystals.
Reese Witherspoon
If you had never seen or heard of Reese Witherspoon until this Emmys red carpet and someone pointed her out and said, “That woman is a literal princess,” you would have no choice but to believe them. She looks elegant, timeless, and regal with her classic bun; stylist Lona Vigi smoothed it into place with the GHD Chronos Styler and ensured it would stay perfect with Fekkai Clean Stylers Flexi-Hold Hairspray—nude lips, metallic, bronze-y eyeliner, and lush lashes courtesy of Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara (via makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan). When we look back on this look in 20, 50, 70 years, we'll be taking inspiration from it then, too.
Ayo Edebiri
As much as we love when Ayo Edebiri changes up her hair, we're head over heels for the long, voluminous waves she's been wearing lately, and we're so happy she brought them to the Emmys red carpet. Stylist Miles Jeffries used Maui Moisture Frizz-Free + Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Mist and defused her hair until it was completely dry. He defined the style with an iron, and to add volume, he used Covet & Mane Coveted Tape-In Extensions.
“Ayo’s custom Bottega gown had a beautiful shine to it that I wanted to replicate on the skin and lips,” says makeup artist Ernesto Casillas, and he was able to do so with Charlotte Tilbury Lip & Cheek Glow.
Jennifer Aniston
Folks, if ain't broke, don't fix it. We're not saying we don't love when celebrities experiment a little with their look, but Jennifer Aniston perpetually makes a riveting case for sticking to a signature look. She brought that Jen-e sais quoi (get it?!) to the Emmys red carpet with her always-awe-inspiring bronde layers, made super shiny by her LolaVie Lightweight Hair Oil.
For her face, makeup artist Angela Levin got her skin glowing with two shades of Chanel Ultra le Teint Ultrawear All-Day Comfort Flawless Finish Foundation, BR42 and BD51. “The skin naturally has different tones, so by applying two shades of foundation, you end up creating a more natural look, all while achieving full coverage glam,” she says. And for her sweet and simple French manicure, nail artist Kim Truong used Aprés Nail’s Light & Shadow Sheer Gel Couleur in For Once to create the subtle pink base and the brand's Cloud Nine for the white tips.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph
We're gonna need Da'Vine Joy Randolph to show us a little more of her newly red hair. Not that the wet look peeking out from under her dress's delicate hood doesn't look incredibly chic, but this hairstyle and color definitely deserve some time in the spotlight. “To achieve this look, I used #Mydentity MyHero Nourishing Crème while wet to add moisture to the hair and set the look,” says stylist Tai Simon. “To define the texture look, I used #Mydentity MyHero Nourishing Crème leave-in styler treatment on the top of my fingers and lightly pulled a few hairs out.”
She paired the piece-y style with a simultaneously neutral and bold makeup look, including tawny lips—makeup artist Sheika Daley applied Lanc?me L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink Lipstick—a brightly lined waterline, and fabulous lashes.
Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts, nominated for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, is holding on tight to the last days of summer with her super-bright coral lip, a combination of Chanel 31 Le Rouge Satin Lipstick in Rouge Accessoire and N°5 dreamed up by makeup artist Mary Wiles, which feels simultaneously playful and serious—seriously glamorous. There's an Old Hollywood aura beaming from her chic bob, which is deeply side-parted and shaped to curve inward right under her chin.
Nicola Coughlin
There are two benefits to Nicola Coughlin's lovely Emmys hairstyle. First, it provides fantastic accessorizing inspo with a stunning, silver barrette that matches her dress. Second, it's pulled back in such a way that lets us see her peachy monochromatic makeup look by Adam Breuchaud, with beautifully diffused blush—specifically, Chanel Joues Contraste Intense Cream-to-Powder Blush in Rose Radiant—that practically blends right into her soft eye shadow, which is actually Chanel N°1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm.
Hannah Einbinder
We are here for Hannah Einbinder's dusty rose moment. After legendary aesthetician Joanna Czech used her eponymous line to prep the Hacks star's skin, her makeup artist, Molly Greenwald, gave that glowing canvas the monochromatic treatment: soft yet deep pink lips—first made even softer with the help of Blue Lagoon Lip Balm—and matching bold, blurred blush. Her lob was given a perfectly imperfect middle part with just a hint of wave down the length.
Rita Ora
Old Hollywood fairy princess is an aesthetic we didn't know existed and didn't know we needed until Rita Ora came through with it on the Emmys red carpet. In addition to shimmering shoulders, she went with the prettiest pink lip—care of Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm Plumping Lip Gloss—and blush, pale eye shadow, and an updo with the most sweetly curled, side-swept bangs. Stylist Rick Henry first added The Kacey Welch Method Tape-In Extensions, followed by setting the front section with a 3/4-inch iron and then pulling the rest back into a French twist.
Brie Larson
The coquette look is still alive and well atop Brie Larson's head. Nominated for Lessons in Chemistry, the actor wore her long hair half-up, with a simple black bow positioned high and mighty. Her low-key makeup look is something we'll absolutely be imitating every day.
“To give this a fresh, modern twist, I applied Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream in Soleil Tan Medium Bronze, focusing on sculpting her cheekbones and forehead for that soft, sculpted look,” says makeup artist Nina Park. “For her eyes, I wanted a defined but subtle liner to really bring out her natural beauty. I applied Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir to create full, fluttery lashes—a must for the look.”
Ella Purnell
Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell plays a ‘90s teen, and her Emmys look is a glammed-up version of ’90s grunge. Her super-dark lipstick and matching dark nails feel perfect for the upcoming fall season, and she topped off the most gorgeous, voluminous, middle-parted waves with two simple bobby pins—a look that we couldn't get enough of pre-Y2K.
Ilona Maher
We already knew Olympian Ilona Maher can glam it up with the best of ‘em, but she’s never looked quite so stunning as she did on the Emmys red carpet. The rugby queen wore a much different kind of ponytail than she's used to wearing on the pitch: Smooth but not slicked back, it sits high and loosely wavy, with a lovely little tendril draped in front, drawing attention to her hot pink, glossy lipstick.
