Bethany Hamilton says she’s not happy Macaron was booted from ‘The Masked Singer’: ‘I feel like a sore loser’
Season 12 of “The Masked Singer” continued Wednesday night on FOX, with the Group C contestants making their debut in “Who Are You Fest.” Following the studio audience vote, Macaron became the first singer eliminated (and seventh overall this season), revealing professional surfer and author Bethany Hamilton. “I sing to my children every day, I have four littles,” Bethany tells Gold Derby. “In my head I was like, ‘Ooo, I could maybe get better at singing. It just looked like a really fun challenge. I always have loved challenges.”

The athlete admits that singing “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen “doesn’t necessarily reflect something that I would sing every single day, but it was a really fun song.” She also admits the Macaron costume was “so out of my comfort zone.” She continues, “I live a very simple life as far as clothing. Seeing this extravagant costume got me laughing. It was really fun to wear and so unique. We added a little bit of a hippie touch because I’m from Hawaii and my parents were hippies when they moved out here. I was rockin’ a bit of the roots.”
Panelists Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed the surfer was Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Monica Lewinsky, or Ariana Madix. “I’m so oblivious to what’s going on out in the world that I have no clue who those people were. I will say, I thought I was going to do better. I feel a bit like a poor loser. I thought I was going to at least make one round. I thought my performance would pay off. Let’s just be honest. My voice isn’t my strong suit, but I thought my performance would get me further. That was a little rough. I was like, ‘What?! What’s wrong? Outrage!'”
Eventually it was Rita Ora who pieced together the clues and guessed Macaron was Bethany. “I feel like that’s really rare for them to guess someone, so I was a little surprised,” she admits. “In my costume, they had a prosthetic arm on my costume. You could kind of tell. Maybe that was a big enough clue for her. She also had a sweet little story, she was like, ‘When I was little in London my mom shared this story with me.’ So maybe it popped into her head pretty easy.”
Bethany also reflects on the shark attack she survived in 2003, struggling with life in the public eye, and finding “the beauty in storytelling.”
