Beyond Fest Lineup Includes ‘Salem’s Lot’, ‘Speed’ Reunion and Trump Origin Story ‘The Apprentice’

The long-awaited unveiling of Gary Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot, the west coast premiere of Terrifier 3, a 30th anniversary Speed reunion with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and focus on filmmakers Sam Raimi and Shane Black are among the many highlights of the 12th edition of Beyond Fest, which will hit Los Angeles starting Sept. 25.

Other big-name titles include the international premiere of Toho’s My Hero Academia: You’re Next and the west coast premieres of The Brutalist, the immigration thriller that is coming off a Silver Lion award for best director at the Venice Film Festival. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora, Donald Trump origin story The Apprentice, and Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch are also on the docket And there will be the U.S. premiere of Sarah Paulson’s suspense thriller Hold Your Breath.

Billing itself the largest genre film festival in the United States, Beyond Fest will serve up 82 features this year, including 16 world premieres, four international premieres, one North American premiere, three US premieres, and 25 west coast premieres.

Presented by hip distributor NEON and programmed and produced in partnership with the American Cinematheque, the Beyond Fest line-up will unspool at the Egyptian Theatre, Aero Theatre, Los Feliz 3, and Vista Theatre running Sept. 25 through Oct. 9.

Among the festival’s popular programs are the in-person Q&As, and this year promises to be muscular. In addition to the Speed reunion featuring its stars and director Jan de Bont, Kyle MacLachlan will be on hand for a career tribute featuring his performances in Blue Velvet, the original Dune movie and The Hidden. Al Pacino returns to discuss his career with a screening of Scarface while Ron Perlman will bring his gravely growl for a 20th anniversary screening of Hellboy.

Barbara Crampton will host The Ladies of Elm Street with Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Lin Shaye, and Ronee Blakley followed by a screening of Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will be on stage for a 30th-anniversary matinée of Tim Burton classic Ed Wood. Don Johnson will be feted during a double bill of A Boy and His Dog and The Hot Spot while Bob Odenkirk reunites the cast and crew for the world premiere of a brand new restoration of Melvin Goes to Dinner.

Filmmakers are just as key to the proceedings as actors. The line-up includes a Raimi triple bill (Darkman, The Quick and the Dead, and Drag Me to Hell) and a Black quadruple bill that will include Kiss Kiss Band Bang, The Nice Guys, The Last Boy Scout and Lethal Weapon. Elsewhere, Jennifer Kent will celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Babadook, paired wither feature The Nightingale, while Walter Hill revisits Southern Comfort, Paul W.S. Anderson revisits Event Horizon, and Tarsem Singh revisits restorations of The Cell and The Fall.

Other highlights: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell will to debut the restored and unrated cut of Saw; what is being described as a formal Hollywood premiere for Texas Chainsaw Massacre timed for its 50th anniversary and to feature 12 members of the original cast and crew; and a timely 30th anniversary screening of The Crow (yes, the original one starring Brandon Lee). As a bonus, the latter screening will offer an exclusive shirt.

Beyond Fest will open with Dauberman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s seminal novel Salem’s Lot while the closing night honor goes to Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cloud. Kurosawa will also be there in-person to launch a seven-film retrospective.
