The 'Big Bang' baby is here, and the name is...
On The Big Bang Theory, Howard (Simon Helberg) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) welcomed their second child, a boy. Bernadette had her heart set on naming him Michael after her father. But Howard wasn’t on board. Fortunately, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) was there to help. He threw out names like Ranatanata, Ozymandias, and Bish. Oddly, Howard and Bernadette didn’t choose any of those. Instead, they went with Neil Michael.
The Neil is for Neil Armstrong, geek icon Neil Gaiman, and the great Neil Diamond. The Michael is for, as mentioned, Bernadette’s father. And even though Michael is the baby’s middle name, Bernadette still pretty much got her way.
As Howard is FaceTiming with the rest of the group, Bernadette can be heard offscreen yelling, “But we’re calling him Michael!” And Howard says he’s not going to fight her because the baby’s head was “the size of a cantaloupe.”
Some fans have wondered if they might actually get to see baby Neil. Howard and Bernadette’s daughter, Hallie, has never been seen onscreen — an homage to Howard’s late mother who was often heard but never seen. According to executive producer Steve Holland, it’s possible but not likely.
About having babies on set, Holland said, “It makes me feel terrible for them, so I’m not superexcited to have someone haul their newborn twins and shove them in front of a camera.”
The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
