The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons Was ‘Hesitant’ to Return for Young Sheldon Finale
The Big Bang Theory alum Jim Parsons opens up about reprising his beloved Sheldon Cooper role on the May 16 series finale of Young Sheldon.
Parsons played Sheldon Cooper on all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory, from 2007 to 2019. He then returned to Sheldon’s world, this time as the narrator, in the prequel series, Young Sheldon. He also served as the show’s executive producer.
On returning as the grown up Sheldon for the show’s finale, which will see him reuniting with Mayim Bialik’s Amy Farrah Fowler, the actor revealed to PEOPLE that he didn’t want to revisit the character at first.
“I felt a slight hesitancy when they first asked, just as I thought, I don’t really want to go revisit the character. But the way that they wrote it in was I thought so beautiful that it ended up being like this little extra coda or whatever to my experience with the character,” said Parsons.
He continued, “It was this gift of a second layer of losing it out in a way that I had never seen coming, and it was a real treat.”
What to expect in the Young Sheldon series finale?
Iain Armitage stars as the younger version of Sheldon in the prequel series, chronicling Sheldon’s earlier life in East Texas with his family, Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry), George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber), Georgie (Montana Jordan), Missy (Raegan Revord), and Connie “Meemaw” Tucker (Annie Potts).
The one-hour Young Sheldon finale is expected to explore the aftermath of the patriarch’s death. It is also revealed that the final hour of the prequel series will fast-forward to the future, which will see the adult Sheldon revealing why he has been narrating his childhood. Though it is still unknown why the socially inept genius has been revisiting his life in Texas, the recent clip suggests that he may be writing his memoir.
The final episode of Young Sheldon airs on May 16.
