Billy Crystal reveals he got high before getting an MRI during recent health scare
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday, 73-year-old comedy legend Billy Crystal talked about a recent injury he sustained to one of his hips and why, when it came time to get an MRI, he decided to do a little self-medicating to help himself get over that fear of being in an enclosed space.
“I'm very claustrophobic, which is why I was a month premature,” Crystal joked. “To make a long story short, when I was alone, I swallowed four edibles.”
Crystal was referring to edibles containing THC. If you’re wondering what it’s like when an iconic figure like Crystal goes into a weed dispensary, you’re in luck, because he broke it all down.
“The guy at the cannabis place said — because there's a section for seniors,” Crystal said. “‘Two will make you feel good.’ So I said, ‘I really want to feel fabulous.’”
Ironically, there is actually a popular strain of cannabis named after the actor, but no word on if he gets any sort of a discount or if he's tried his own flavor. What we do know is that the edibles seemed to work, in more ways than one, because while Crystal had no problem with the tight quarters of the MRI machine, he did have one other issue: He got hungry.
Crystal claimed that he asked the doctor about 30 minutes into the procedure if there was a Taco Bell nearby, and he followed that up ten minutes later by wondering about a potential delivery from Postmates.
“I'm thinking gumbo, or Nutella french toast,” Crystal said. “Something like that.”
The actor, who is once again lending his voice to the Monsters Inc. franchise with a new series on Disney+, said that he was eventually able to fall asleep in the machine. However, when he was finished, his desire to get to Taco Bell got the best of him.
“They take me out, and I walk out of the building and someone says, ‘um, sir, you're still in your gown. And your ass is hanging out,’” Crystal said. “So I came back in, I got dressed, and I went to Taco Bell and had a nacho fry box.”
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
