Billy Crystal reveals where his and Meg Ryan’s ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ characters would be today

Billy Crystal has shared where he thinks his and Meg Ryan’s beloved “When Harry Met Sally…” characters would be today.
The actor, 76, spoke with E!’s red carpet host Laverne Cox ahead of the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.
“They’d be talking about downsizing,” he said. “They’re not ready for assisted living yet.”
“But they’re still romantic, still in love,” he added.
One of the most famous and acclaimed romantic comedies of all time, “When Harry Met Sally…” tells the story of two friends who have the slow burn romance to end all slow burn romances, finally getting together 12 years after they first met.
And, 35 years since the movie opened, Crystal thinks Harry and Sally would still be “keeping it romantic” after all this time.
“They’re probably having a great time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to be with each other,” he said at the Emmys.
Crystal also spoke of how he feels being part of a movie that has had such staying power and relevance for audiences over the years.
“It’s extraordinary to be part of an evergreen [movie] like that after all these years,” he remarked. “Young people finding it; getting called from film schools and 22-year-olds finding the movie; 21-year-olds, and coming to speak to them about it.”
The actor attributed the staying power of “When Harry Met Sally…” to “great directing” from Rob Reiner and a “brilliant script” from legendary scribe Nora Ephron, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 71.
Crystal also gave credit to Ryan and late co-stars Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher. “It was a small but powerful group,” he said.
The “City Slickers” actor was honored last December at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors and paid tribute to Ryan. He told People, “We were thrown together by [Reiner and Ephron], chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years later, we’re still a couple to everybody.”
“As you get further along and new generations see this movie and feel it and watch it over and over again on Valentine’s Day, on New Year’s Eve, whatever it is,” he continued. “You know, people fall in love every day, and people fall out of love every day.”
Crystal was at the Emmys a little more than one month before the debut of his new Apple TV+ series, “Before.” Crystal plays a widowed child psychologist in the thriller, which also stars Judith Light and Rosie Perez. “Before” premieres on October 25.
