Billy Dee Williams pranked 'Star Wars' co-star Mark Hamill before royal meeting — and the photo is hilarious
Luke Skywalker may be thick as thieves with twin sister Princess Leia, but in real life, Mark Hamill’s royal interactions have been a bit rockier.
While much has been made of Princes William and Harry’s Star Wars fandom — the brothers shot cameos as stormtroopers for 2017’s The Last Jedi but were cut from the final edit — it turns out that the British royals have been hobnobbing with the Rebel Alliance for decades.
Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: Episode IX, has photographic proof. On Wednesday morning the 81-year-old actor tweeted a photo from the 1980 royal premiere of The Empire Strikes Back, which shows him, Hamill, Frank Oz (Yoda), and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) lining up to greet Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II and supreme goddess of The Crown.

Hamill has his head respectfully lowered, and there’s a hilarious reason: According to the actor, a mischievous Williams had pranked him into believing that looking a royal directly in the eyes would get him the Anne Boleyn treatment (well, minus the beheading).
This photo was snapped moments after @realbdw told me that direct eye contact with royalty was an offense punishable by imprisonment in the Tower of London.#Pranked https://t.co/V93EsgGT9y

The confession has Star Wars fans in stitches — with many saluting Williams’s real-life Lando spirit.
Convinced that @realbdw wasn’t even acting when he played Lando. He was just being himself pic.twitter.com/MZQWjPUDYv

Such a beautiful moment, a precious memory to old dear ??
And aww, what a prank , I think if you ever got imprisoned , you could escape with your Jedi tricks 😀— Claudia (@Claudia__83) September 19, 2018

But fear not: Young Hamill did still get an eyeful of the royal, as seen in this photo a fan shared on Twitter last October. There he is looking absolutely delighted and smitten — or perhaps just relieved that he dodged prison time? — as co-star Carrie Fisher locks eyes with her fellow princess.
Make no mistake: Even Lando knows better than to mess with Leia.
Princess Margaret, not the Queen, who apparently was otherwise engaged.
