BioShock Infinite was not the end of the franchise

Though BioShock Infinite by no means signaled the definitive end of the BioShock franchise in 2013, the series’ future became uncertain when the team that originated it, Irrational Games, closed in 2014. But Take-Two’s CEO recently made comments that, though the series has been dormant since Infinite, it does have a future.

CEO Strauss Zelnick, speaking at the MKM Partners Investor Day conference, as reported by GameSpot, called BioShock a “permanent franchise.” This wording has been used before to describe Red Dead, which was last seen with 2010’s Red Dead Redemption.

“…BioShock is unquestionably a permanent franchise for our company and one that we do believe in,” Zelnick said, noting that the franchise is now in the care of 2K Games, which is currently made up of several studios, including 2K Marin, who led development on BioShock 2.

Zelnick says he doesn’t want to speak for 2K in terms of any actual announcements for future titles, but it should come as a relief to BioShock fans worried Irrational’s dissolution and what that meant for the future of BioShock. The franchise clearly has a future, but what it is will likely revealed in the coming months and years. In terms of BioShock‘s history, EW named BioShock Infinite the best game of 2013, and the original BioShock as our favorite game of the Xbox 360.
