Take a bite: 13 local pizzerias where you can grab a slice on National Pizza Day

National Pizza Day is Feb. 9 and although we don't need a special day to remind us to eat one of the nation's favorite meals, the day always calls for a celebration.

From the way it brings people together, to its hand-held convenience and eclectic toppings, pizza has earned a designated day to recognize its presence in our lives.

Whether you plan to celebrate on Friday or if you're waiting until Super Bowl Sunday to enjoy a few slices, the Tallahassee Democrat has compiled a list of some of the city's local pizzerias to help you celebrate.

Piesanos Stone Fired Pizza, a Gainesville-based pizzeria, which opened in January, is a newcomer on the ever-growing list. Tallahassee has a variety of pizza establishments but here are 12 favorites to get you started on a cheesy adventure.

Blaze Pizza

The fast-casual chain, Blaze Pizza offers a made-to-order style to fit the changing desires of its consumers and their taste buds. A variety of doughs, sauces and toppings are available to fulfill every pizza fantasy. The pizza franchise has just rebranded its foundation and are currently working to add more signature pizzas and locally sourced ingredients to its menu. It recently introduced the new "Fast Fire'd" meatballs a beef and pork blend topped in red sauce. Blaze Pizza offers dine-in, pickup, and delivery services.

Nearing 20 years of operation, is Brickyard Pizzeria located in Killearn. The family owned and operated pizzeria is prized for its consistent quality and family-friendly service. Brickyard Pizzeria offers lunch specials from Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at affordable prices starting at $6.99. One of their popular pizzas is the signature Brickyard Pizza made with peperoni, mushroom, onions, sausage, green peppers, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Brickyard Pizzeria offers take-out services.

Love Pizza? Dave's Pizza Garage is celebrating Heart Pizza Day on Feb. 14 with special order-ahead heart-shaped pizzas for Valentine's Day. The Buffalo, New York-modeled restaurant describes itself as a “locally owned gem” in the Killearn area. The pizza garage, which opened 10 years ago, offers 15 specialty pizzas, including the “Not Your Mama’s Spaghetti” pizza, which combines spaghetti, meatballs, a garlic butter parmesan crust, with mozzarella sprinkled on top. The Bradley's Devil Dog Pizza features local Bradley's smoked sausage. Dave’s Pizza Garage offers dine-in, pickup and delivery services.

Humbly describing themselves as a decent pizza joint, foodies in the capital city have designated it as one of their favorite pizza spots. The family-owned pizzeria offers giant slices and 12 New York Style “brick oven pie” specialties including the "Margherita" pizza made with a tomato base, mozzarella, basil, heirloom tomatoes and flakey sea salt. Decent Pizza offers dine-in, curbside, and delivery services.

Gaines Street Pies serves as a pizza hotspot for surrounding college students attending Florida A&M, Florida State and Tallahassee Community College. Gaines Street Pies is a comic-book themed pizzeria that takes foodies to a new dimension, bringing campus cultures together through a shared love of pizza. The city loves Momo's and Momo's “Love You To Pizzas.” The Valentine's Day, Ricotta based pizza is made with blackberries and goat cheese, and then topped off with honey, basil and pistachios. The specialty pizza is available for the entire month of February at the Market Street location. The Gainesville-based pizzeria chain has already cultivated a loyal fan base since its grand opening in January. Located in the Governors Crossing II shopping center, on Park Avenue at Blair Stone Road, the warm and intimate restaurant serves as a place to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine. One of their specialty pizzas includes the classic, the ultra thin “pizza antico” made with fresh mozzarella, charred pepperoni and fresh basil. Piesanos Stone Fired Pizza offers dine-in, take-out and catering services.

Riccardo's, a family-style restaurant has been passed down from generation to generation to continue its loyal following for nearly 25 years. Its most prized possession is their secret dough, which they mix, knead, measure and bake up to 85 pounds every day for their specialty pizzas. Riccardo’s offers dine-in and takeout services.

Solle’s Italian has made a name for itself in the capital city as a fan favorite. The pizzeria offers five specialty pizzas including the Margherita which combines San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil and extra-virgin olive oil into an authentic Neapolitan-styled pizza. Solle’s Italian offers dine-in, takeout, and delivery services.
