The Black Expo summer concert: The lineup and changes for 2024

Put on that red dress.

The lineup for the Outdoor Concert at Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration 2024 has been announced and Mr. Johnny Gill is performing.

Gill (“My, My, My,” “There U Go”), who recently finished the first part of a Las Vegas residency as part of New Edition, leads a roster of 1980s and 90s R&B hitmakers for the June 28 concert.

The show, taking place at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium, 1001 W. New York St., also features Lalah Hathaway (“Heaven Knows,” “Angel”); Morris Day & The Time (“777-9311,” “Jungle Love”); Atlantic Starr  (“Secret Lovers,” “Always”) and Karyn White (“Superwoman,” “Love Saw It”).

There are some big changes with the concert this year.

Everybody gets a seat at the concert.

The concert moves from its longtime home at downtown Indy’s American Legion Mall — an exception being the 2021 event that was slated for Brownsburg, but called off at the last minute.

With the new venue and its stadium seating, there’s no need for guests to bring chairs, organizers said.

The enclosed grounds also offer more enhanced security than did the park, they said.

There is an admission charge for all attendees this year.

The event, which has been free in the past, now has a $10 charge for general admission. Premium seating will cost $50-$100.

Ticket sales proceeds will help benefit IBE’s youth and family programs, and its scholarship fund, organizers said.

Tickets will be available starting April 3 at ticketmaster.com.

In its 53rd year, the Summer Celebration comes a bit early in 2024.

Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration dates are earlier this year.

This year’s events, including a three-day exhibition, are slated for June 20-30, to accommodate the National Eucharistic Congress that’s taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium July 17-21.

The annual Summer Celebration, which features concerts, business and health expos and conferences, typically starts in mid-July. Indiana Black Expo will go back to its traditional July dates starting in 2025.

It’s one of the major events produced by Indiana Black Expo, a nonprofit organization that promotes social and economic advancement of African Americans through year-round initiatives, including its Black Business Training Institute, Scholarship Fund, Performing Arts Academy and Community Learning Hub.
