Blake Lively is in her crafty mom era, and it’s impressive! She shared a picture of the Halloween costumes she made for her daughters James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, and every detail is enchanting.
In a new cover story for Vogue published yesterday, the It Ends With Us star revealed she enjoys making Halloween costumes for her kids, who she shares with husband Ryan Reynolds. She told the outlet, “I got cloaks on Etsy and went to the Garment District, got all the trims. Look, I did all this, the sweetheart shape, the details on the sleeve…”

Intriguing, right? So thankfully for all the Pinterest moms like us, she shared a picture of the finished costumes on her Instagram story, inspired by the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus. (PEOPLE has a screenshot HERE.) The costumes were displayed on child-sized mannequins and looked like something out of the film. Winnie Sanderson (played be Bette Midler) had a green cloak over a dress with gold details and costume jewels, plus a wig with red curly hair. From the embroidery on the hood to the witchy patterns, this costume is stunning!
Sarah Sanderson (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) had her iconic pink dress with a spider web-like details, a corset, and a purple cloak. Finally, Mary Sanderson (played by Kathy Najimy) has a velvet maroon cloak over a dress with a checkered-print skirt and a matching apron. Each witch also has her own broomstick, which were wrapped in ribbon and decorated with shiny gold moons. These are seriously good!
In the caption, the Gossip Girl alum explained, “In fairness I don’t know how to pattern make. So I start with a base dress (or broom or wig) from Etsy or Amazon and build out all the layers and trim and details and flourishes and build from there, applying on top.” She can try to minimize it all she wants, but the creativity and talent still shines through!
Lively shared that this love of homemade costumes comes from her mom, Elaine Lively. “My mom used to make everything from scratch,” she revealed. “I LOVED and appreciated that so much but never learned how myself. Bucket list skills left to learn.”
In a Feb. 2024 interview on the Further Ado Substack with Amber Tamblyn, Lively’s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-star, the mom of four shared how she feels “electrified” since having kids. “I have experienced every single emotion in the human spectrum of emotions and then some. The greatest highs, the greatest fears, the lows, all of it. So what I feel in my body is everything.”
“It makes it so much easier because I feel so authentically now versus imagining and that translates into all of my creativity,” Lively, who is also mom to 1-year-old son Olin, added. “When I get scared of something, it’s so much bigger and faster and brighter. When I feel love, it’s brighter. Everything is just probably what cocaine feels like.”
Channeling all those big feelings into creativity is honestly inspiring! BRB, time to start working on ideas for Halloween costumes…
