The Aftermath of Miley’s VMA Performance … Who Is Team Cyrus?
In case you've been living under a rock (or actually paying attention to important issues like, say, Syria), Miley Cyrus dominated headlines this week following her twerk-filled performance at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday.
Twitter erupted as the 20-year-old proved she was Hannah Montana no more, bumping and grinding on Robin Thicke and waving a foam finger around during their "We Can't Stop/Blurred Lines" collaboration.
It seems everyone had an opinion on tongue-tastic Miles, so we compiled a list of those who were Team Twerk and those on Team Dignity.
Check out Miley Cyrus's VMA scorecard:
Miley Cyrus: "Me and Robin (Thicke) the whole time said, 'You know, we're about to make history right now,'" she told MTV. "What's amazing is I think now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it. They're over thinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it 'cause that's just me."
Harry Styles: "I think it's quite inappropriate," he told Moviefone about twerking. "Especially for the age groups that it's aimed at." The One Direction singer also joked at the NYC premiere of "This Is Us" it wasn't provocative at all: "I thought it was vanilla. I would feel comfortable watching it with my grandma."
Miley Cyrus ... according to her manager: "She couldn't be happier," Larry Rudolph told People. "Most of it came from Miley's brain. But she collaborated with [her music video director] Diane Martel, who helped her conceive it and bring in the spirit of the VMAs. And with Todd James who designed all of those amazing bears."
The Bears: "Miley made a poor choice to use a universally loved children's teddy bear in an offensive way," a spokesperson for The Teddy Bear Fund (yes, it exists) said in a statement. "There is always good art and bad art, unfortunately this was bad art. Hopefully she might consider reversing this situation by giving lots of teddy bears to children in need of comfort."
Robin Thicke's mom, Gloria Loring: "I just keep thinking of her mother and father watching this. Oh, Lord, have mercy," Loring exclusively told "omg! Insider." "I was not expecting her to be putting her butt that close to my son. The problem is now I can never 'unsee' it … I don't understand what Miley Cyrus is trying to do. I just don't understand. I think she's misbegotten in this attempt of hers. And I think it was not beneficial."
Justin Timberlake: "Listen, man, you know, it’s the VMAs. What did you guys expect?” Justin commented on Tuesday. “I like Miley. I like her a lot. I think, you know, she's young. She's letting everyone know that she's growing up. I just think it's the VMAs. It's not like she did it at the Grammys. Let her do her thing. You know?"
Justin Timberlake (according to 'N Sync member Chris Kirkpatrick): "I think when we were watching [Miley] — I saw Justin getting a little angry," Chris noted on Monday. "And when he gets angry, I said 'Uh-oh. That means we better be on point, because he's about to go out and kill it now.'"
Parents Television Council: "This is unacceptable," the PTC said in a statement. "MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate 'twerking' in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?"
Billy Ray Cyrus: "Of course I'll always be here for Miley," Billy Ray (who sits on the advisory board of the PTC) told ET. "Can't wait [to] see her when she gets home. She's still my little girl and I'm still her dad regardless how this circus we call show business plays out. I love her unconditionally and that will never change."
Alan Thicke: "Parents still bemoaning VMAs might have had a clue when Gaga bared butt in opening. Good time to lock up your children?!" he tweeted, along with: "The firestorm rages on. VMA now stands for 'View Miley's Ass'. BTW, they're killing people with chemical weapons in Syria."
Donald Trump: "Miley, don't let them get you down. They're all jealous," Trump posted in a Vine video on Thursday. We guess twerking doesn't get you fired, then?
Sherri Shepherd: "Oh, she's going to hell in a twerking hand basket," Sherri said on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." "When I was growing up, that wasn't called 'twerking.' That was called a ho move."
Lance Bass: "I didn't know I had to warn [my nieces and nephews in the audience] that their little Hannah Montana was going to be naked and humping a finger," he said on his Sirius XM show, Dirty Pop With Lance Bass. "I think it's her thing … I think she shocked a lot of her younger fans, especially the parents, who might not be so happy with her thing, but she's just being Miley."
Chris Kirkpatrick: "You know, it was what it was. I don't get it," he told Orlando radio program Johnny's House. "To me, it just seems like sometimes people think you have to out-weird people. That's not what it's about. You know, the kids wanna see you out there doing your songs and just being you — and I'm sure she's a great girl, but I was a little disappointed."
Cyndi Lauper: "She's in a song that literally says that the blurred lines allowed you to — when a woman says no, she means yes — and that's frightful because that's date rape," said Lauper on an Australian radio show. "I just felt like that was so beneath her and raunchy, really raunchy. It wasn't even art."
Brooke Shields: "I was Hannah Montana's mother. I do not approve," Shields said while serving as a guest host on the "Today" show. "Where did I go wrong? I just want to know who's advising her, and why it's necessary? I feel like it's a bit desperate."
Adam Lambert: The "American Idol" alum tweeted: "Listen if it wasn't ur cup of tea - all good but why is everyone spazzing? Hey - she's doin something right. We all talking."
