Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were always an old school country song waiting to happen… and now it has. The pair has filed for divorce after four years of marriage.

"This is not the future we envisioned," their reps said in a joint statement to the Associated Press. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."

Shelton, 39, and Lambert, 31, were last photographed together at the Academy of Country Music Awards in April, and both performed at the Greenbriar Classic on July 3. They have no kids together.

The two singers spent most of their relationship battling breakup buzz, so we imagine this isn't coming as much of a shock to fans, but it's still a sad song. The Voice coach was married to Kaynette Gern when he first met Lambert in 2005 at CMT's 100 Greatest Duets Concert. She sang backup for him and he divorced Gern in 2006. Shelton proposed to Lambert in May 2010, and they tied the knot a year later.

"My parents have been married 33 years," Miranda told Entertainment Weekly, recalling a promise she and Blake made on their wedding day. "My mama always said this for as long as I can remember, and I said it to Blake before we got married: 'Divorce is not an option.' Blake's mom and dad have both been divorced a couple of times and remarried, and so it’s a whole different thought process on his part. But what I’ve brought to the relationship is, you don’t quit. And one fight does not equal this is over.

Still, they've been plagued with a steady stream of cheating rumors, which Blake addressed in 2013. "I love it," he told Gayle King on CBS This Morning. "I honestly do love it. I just know, to have that kind of coverage, if I'm popular enough they want to put me and Miranda on that stuff — that's awesome." He drove his message of happy-togetherness home later by adding, "We had our ups and downs for damn sure along the way. I just could not imagine her not being in my life, I just couldn't get over her, I know I can't."

Unfortunately, it looks like he'll have to.
