The two-and-a-half-minute trailer for Blood Red Sky is rife with high anxiety curveballs. First, mom and son get separated at the airport. Then, mention of mom’s mysterious illness. Next, hijackers! And finally—and this is the coup de grace—vampire. Toss in a drunk pilot and you’ve got a complete bingo.

Clearly, Blood Red Sky is playing within a few different horror- and thriller-adjacent subgenres. What’s more, it seems game for mining each and every for maximum tension. Whenever you’ve got a vulnerable kid in the picture, you’re aiming for maximum audience dread. Hijacking scenarios, while no longer the go-to they once were in Hollywood, are likewise big earners in the chills department. Blood diseases? Don’t get me started. But vampires! And specifically grotesque-looking vampires with cracking skin and dripping incisors? Oy.

Blood Red Sky also boasts a few interesting faces, namely the ArrowVerse’s Dominic Purcell, and everything else’s Graham McTavish. (Seriously—The Hobbit, Castlevania, Lucifer, Preacher, 24… you get the idea.) The film hails from German director Peter Thorwarth, who cowrote with Stefan Holtz.

Below, find the full synopsis for Blood Red Sky, courtesy of home platform Netflix:
