The North Carolina-based fried chicken chain Bojangles will break ground on its first Ohio restaurant on Thursday.

The first of 15 new restaurants planned in the Columbus area, announced two years ago, is expected to open in April at 831 Hilliard Rome Rd. on the city's Far West Side, offering a much shorter drive for central Ohioans than the current nearest Bojangles north of Lexington, Kentucky.

Longtime Bojangles restaurant franchisee and Columbus native Jeff Rigsby expects to open 45 Bojangles over the next several years in the Columbus area, and in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Rigsby plans to open the 15 Columbus-area restaurants over the next seven years.

Bojangles currently has 780 company-owned and franchised restaurants in 15 states. In addition to its fried chicken, the chain is known for its biscuits.

A few national and regional chains are expected to open new locations in Columbus this year, including Roll On In, Five Guys and Maple Street Biscuit Company.
