Bold & Beautiful’s Taylor Returns to a Battle for the Ages

To quote rising-star singer Chappell Roan’s latest hit, “Good luck, babe.” Bold & Beautiful has dropped Taylor back onto the canvas with a helluva fight on her hands: to make us overlook the fact that new portrayer Rebecca Budig is only 14 years older than Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, who plays her second child, Steffy.

Obviously, soaps play fast and loose with ages all the time. Technically, strapping Will is only 11! But Taylor 3.0 is so young that it boggles the mind. How old would she have been when she had Thomas? Or when she was married to Blake Hayes, the abusive first husband after whom Steffy and Finn’s son is mystifyingly named? Talk about a child bride!

We haven’t seen casting that’s quite this eyebrow-raising since General Hospital tapped Tanisha Harper to play TJ’s mom, Jordan. Look at ’em — don’t they resemble a soap supercouple more than mother and son? See also: that show’s Olivia and Dante, for whom we’d totally matchmake if only they weren’t mother and son. (What? They have chemistry that they shouldn’t.)

The only time we can recall a soap casting a mother/daughter who were closer in age was back in 1992 when Guiding Light tapped Elizabeth Keifer to play Blake opposite Maureen Garrett’s mom Holly; they were only 13 years apart! But eventually, viewers accepted it.

So maybe we’ll buy Budig’s Taylor giving motherly advice to Steffy and Thomas, too. If nothing else, it oughta be fun to see Brooke react to having a rival who’s so baby-faced, she could be mistaken for one of Hope and Steffy’s peers.
