‘Book Club’ Trailer: Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton Read ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and Are Forever Changed
The “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie franchise may have ended with the release of this year’s “Fifty Shades Freed” — the climax, and don’t you forget it — but the cultural reach of E.L. James’ bestselling novels has not yet petered out in the cinematic realm. In Bill Holderman’s upcoming “Book Club,” the first book in the trilogy upends the lives of a tight group of older ladies, who just so happen to read the saucy tome in their titular (and, apparently, titillating) book club.
The new comedy stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as four lifelong friends who opt to read the book as part of their monthly group, and find their lives — not just their reading habits — totally changed in the process. “The book becomes a catalyst that turns everybody’s life upside down,” co-star Steenburgen recently told People. “We all start really talking about men, sex and our relationships to our bodies…Something just connected between the four of us. It was really fun to be in a situation where we had so much in common so many things to talk about.”

In the film’s first trailer, the foursome embark on their reading odyssey to some very surprising results. Suddenly, the world around them — well, the world involving cute waiters — is filled with romantic (and, yes, okay, sexy) possibilities). Still, there’s a bit of a shock factor to get over as the women really dig deep into James’ book. This thing is dirty, after all, and it’s hardly the kind of material they’re used to consuming. What’s next? A quickie trip to Vegas?
