As it turns out, there isn’t always a brand new life around the bend — Amazon MGM Studios is no longer developing a continuation of the classic sitcom Who’s the Boss?, TVLine has learned. (The studio has also shelved a potential Bosch spinoff focused on the character of J. Edgar; get more details here.)

The original Who’s the Boss? series, which aired for eight seasons (1984–1992) on ABC, starred Tony Danza as Tony Micelli, a former professional baseball player who gets hired as a housekeeper for advertising executive Angela Bower, played by Judith Light. Additional series regulars included Alyssa Milano as Tony’s daughter Samantha, Danny Pintauro as Angela’s son Jonathan, and Katherine Helmond as Angela’s mother Mona.

(Which of those characters was the titular “boss,” you ask? It’s a question that has plagued mankind since the show debuted… and will continue to haunt us, it seems.)

Talk of a Who’s the Boss? revival first began in 2020, though it would be two more years before the project would ultimately land at Freevee. Danza and Milano were set to reprise their father-daughter roles, with One Day at a Time‘s Mike Royce serving as writer and executive producer, alongside ODAAT writer Brigitte Mu?oz-Liebowitz. The late Norman Lear was also on board as an EP.

In a 2022 interview, Milano said she hoped that the new series could be developed “in a way that really stays true to that whole progressive thing that we had in the ’80s” while still tapping into “today’s issues.”
