Bowen Yang Pokes Fun at Chappell Roan as Hippo Sensation Moo Deng on 'SNL'
Given that Saturday Night Live hasn’t been on for a few months, there was plenty of topical goodness for the sketch-comedy series to catch up on in its big Season 50 premiere. And last night’s Weekend Update segment managed to fit in two of the biggest names dominating headlines as of late: campy pop crooner Chappell Roan and the equally campy baby hippo Moo Deng.
Returning Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che welcomed Moo Deng, the Thai pygmy hippopotamus who went viral in recent weeks thanks to its small stature and bite-happy attitude, to join them at the desk, as played by cast member Bowen Yang. And sweet little Moo Deng had some grievances to air out: “For the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop, running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose…but it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries.”

The baby hippo’s protestations over being the world’s “parasocial bestie” started to sound a bit familiar, especially if you’re a Chappell Roan fan. The "Good Luck, Babe!" singer-songwriter recently made news for pulling out of the All Things Go music festival the day before she was set to perform, citing mental health reasons after public backlash over the pop star’s recent election remarks. After confirming that she’s aware of the singer (“I’m 10 weeks old, Colin, of course I know Chappell Roan!”), Moo Deng had a message for the Chappell-loving public: “Stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her! This is what society does. It puts young women on pedestals only to knock them down with shellfish!”

The hippo also promised that she wouldn’t be making any endorsement in this year’s election, but all of the political talk upset her. “I’m getting stressed out again, can I bite your knee?” Moo hilariously asked Jost. Check out the full bit below:
