Bowen Yang Reveals a Male ‘SNL’ Host ‘Made Multiple Cast Members Cry Because He Hated the Ideas’ at the Table Read: It Was ‘Terrible’
Without naming names, “Saturday Night Live” favorite Bowen Yang has revealed that a male host once made “multiple cast members cry” during a table read for the sketch comedy series because he did not like the ideas that were being discussed for his episode. Yang joined “SNL” in September 2018.
“This man who…this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday during the, before the table-read, because he hated the ideas,” Yang said when asked on “Watch What Happens Live” about the worst “SNL” host behavior he’s ever witnessed. He later called the experience “terrible.”

Yang was also asked during the interview about his biggest bomb when it comes to “SNL” sketches, and he remembered one sketch that was planned for host Ayo Edebiri during the last season.
“We wrote a live sketch where it took place in an elevator, and she and I were, like, telling everyone that we should all make out or something because the elevator got stuck,” Yang explained. “Then, for some reason, it got turned into a pre-tape under our noses, and we had to adapt to that…It just didn’t go as well as I had hoped.”
Yang added, “And you just deal with it. Comedy’s subjective, you never know how it’s gonna play in front of a specific audience. But it’s fine, you let it roll off your back.”
Since joining “SNL,” Yang has received four Emmy nominations. Three of the noms have been in the outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series category. He is once again nominated in that category in 2024.
