Box-Office Breakdown: 'The Revenant' Opens Strong
This past weekend’s box office was a close one, with Leonardo DiCaprio finally getting some love that wasn’t just from supermodels!
Leo’s The Revenant debuted at an incredible $39 million. The film also had a great weekend at the Golden Globes, winning Best Dramatic Film and Best Director along with DiCaprio snagging Best Actor.
And what could possibly be at No. 1? None other than Star Wars: The Force Awakens, topping the box office for the fourth weekend in a row. It made $42 million, beating out The Revenant by only $3 million.
Star Wars also finally opened in China this weekend, making $53 million in two days.
But $53 million is not an impressive number when you compare it with China’s biggest opener of last year, Furious 7, which made $184.2 million in a weekend. Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World also had better China openings than Star Wars.
Star Wars is still pretty shy of highest grossing film of all time as well, coming in at third with $1.7 billion, still $1 billion behind Avatar’s $2.7 billion.
Rounding out the top five was Daddy’s Home at No. 3, The Forest at No. 4 — which by the way is based on a super creepy real forest; see a video about it below — and finally the hilarious Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy, Sisters, at No. 5.
