Boy banders Liam Payne, AJ McLean, more join Netflix's new “Building the Band”

The series begins filming this summer.

Who better to build a band than people who have been part of some of the biggest?

Netflix announced Friday that it has tapped Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean to host reality TV competition Building the Band. The judges are just as familiar: Liam Payne of One Direction, Destiny's Child alum Kelly Rowland, and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.

The streamer described it as "a truly unique competition show where building the perfect band is all about chemistry. The singers are in complete control as they seek to form their very own bands in individual 'booths' without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit."

Payne and Scherzinger, especially, will relate to contestants, because of how One Direction was formed. Payne was one of the five solo contestants on The X Factor U.K. in 2010 who ended up becoming a group. Scherzinger was on the judging panel, and she was instrumental in selecting the members of the ensemble, according to backstage footage the show released in July 2022.

The "Don't Cha" singer argued with fellow judge Simon Cowell that Payne should be part of the act they were assembling, even though Cowell noted that his audition was on another level.

"If he's the standout, then he could be the leader," Scherzinger said. "I think he would definitely shine."

Before Malik left in 2015 and the others embarked on solo projects, 1D was kind of a big deal.

With this show, Netflix teases, "What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography, and style come into play? With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal — to find the next great music band — the stage is set for an unforgettable experience."

While there's no release date yet for the new competitor of singing shows such as The Voice, The Masked Singer, and American Idol, filming begins this summer.
