Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell join Joni Mitchell at the 2024 Grammy Awards
Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell and Sista Strings performed alongside music pioneer Joni Mitchell as she took the stage for her very first Grammy Awards live performance.
At 80, Mitchell, who has been a trailblazer throughout her career, has had a strong influence on Carlile throughout her career.
As Carlile introduced Mitchell, she said, "Whether we know it or not, any one of us out here who ever dreamed of becoming a truly self-revealing signer songwriter is standing on the shoulders of the one and only Joni Mitchell."
She went on to say before Mitchell redefined the very purpose of a sing to reflect the contents of a person's soul, the popular song was merely observational.
"It was brilliant and influential, of course, but the exhilarating risks that we all now take by turning ourselves inside out for all the world to see, started with Joni Mitchell doing it first," Carlile said. "She's like the first person to strip down at the skinny dipping party and take that awkward, terrifying leap before everybody else eventually joyfully follows. In some ways, she didn't have a choice but to take these leaps."
After the heartfelt and sincere introduction where Carlile coined Mitchell the "matriarch of imagination," she joined Mitchell along with Allison Russell and Sista Strings for a sweet rendition of "Both Sides Now."
Earlier in the day, Mitchell won a Grammy for Best Folk Album for "Joni Mitchell at Newport (Live)."
