Whether It Ends With Us will get a big-screen sequel is still unclear, but Brandon Sklenar is ready and willing to play Atlas again.

Speaking with Access at a Ralph Lauren show in New York City on Thursday, Sept. 5, the actor, 34, said he hopes he and the rest of the cast can come together to adapt the 2022 book that author Colleen Hoover wrote, It Starts With Us, as a follow-up to their recent box office hit.

"Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I would love to do it, I really would, I would love to do it," Sklenar said when asked about a sequel. "I hope we can get it together because I think the fans deserve it, and I'd just love to tell more of Atlas' story and get into his past a little more. Yeah, it would be beautiful if we can do it. I would love to."

While It Ends With Us has grown into its star Blake Lively's highest-grossing movie ever at the box office, reports of behind-the-scenes tension among the cast and director-costar Justin Baldoni have clouded the potential for a sequel.

Baldoni, 40, told Variety in August that his production company Wayfarer Studios still holds the option to adapt It Starts With Us, but he said at the time that he had not "even begun to think that far ahead."

The star also told Entertainment Tonight at the New York City premiere Aug. 6 that he thinks Lively should direct the sequel if it happens. "I think that there are better people for that one," Baldoni said at the time. "I think Blake Lively's ready to direct, that's what I think."

Back in August, a Hollywood source told PEOPLE that discussions of a second movie had not yet taken place. About issues behind the scenes, a source from the movie's set said, "There is much more to this story."

"The principal cast and Colleen Hoover will have nothing to do with [Baldoni]," that source said at the time.

Sklenar, who previously spoke out about some of the online negativity surrounding the film, also told Access that the movie's success has increased the degree to which he is recognized in public. "Way more than I was before, yeah, for sure," he said. "It's beautiful though. Just happy to be [part of it]."

It Ends With Us in theaters now.
