Breaking Down 'Suicide Squad' Trailer, 'Wonder Woman,' and More

DC just had a huge television event called, DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League. Kevin Smith and Geoff Johns, the chief creative officer over at DC Entertainment, had big debuts and reveals for practically everything DC, and we’re here to break it all down for you.

We finally got our first look at the Wonder Woman movie. Set during World War I, we meet Diana Prince, an Amazonian immortal created to defend humanity. She’s returned to Earth in spite of her fellow Amazonians’ opinion that mankind isn’t worth defending.

We all know DC’s been playing a game of catch-up with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe for a long time, but its looking to get the jump on Marvel in one important department: being the first to make the modern female superhero movie. Captain Marvel isn’t due out until 2018, so DC’s beating Marvel to the punch here, and its gonna make sure you understand that.

We also got a taste of some of the other Justice League Super Best Friends who we’ll see on the big screen before the end of the decade: Aquaman, the Flash, Cyborg, and even the Green Lantern, back from franchise rehab after his last vehicle crashed and burned in 2011. This time, he’ll have help, in the form of the Green Lantern Corps.

Easily the highlight of the evening, though, was a brand-new Suicide Squad trailer. Marketers wisely stuck to that time-tested karaoke rule: When in doubt, just “Bohemian Rhapsody” the heck out of it. We got more of Margot Robbie being crazy and cute as Harley Quinn, a taste of the tongue-in-cheek tone of the movie’s villainy, and Jared Leto enjoying his scenery chewing as the Joker. All in all, it looks like a blast, and a much needed pop of color in DC’s otherwise easy-to-mock, always-overcast cinematic universe of superseriousness.

As for the rest, we’re not totally sure if we’re sold on everything yet, and it all seems a little early for a show and tell, especially since we haven’t seen Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. That lands in March. What’d you think of all that DC had to present? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
