Bridget Jones Is Widowed and Looking for New Love in Peacock Sequel Trailer
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy going direct to streaming is only the second biggest sequel development revealed Tuesday.
Peacock has announced that the fourth installment in the Renée Zellweger film franchise will bypass theaters in the United States. Following an international theatrical release on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the sequel will land Stateside on Thursday, Feb. 13, where it will stream exclusively on Peacock.

But in more important (and certainly more devastating) news, the synopsis for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy confirms that Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy has died, making our titular heroine a widow.
“Bridget is alone once again, widowed four years ago, when Mark (Colin Firth) was killed on a humanitarian mission in the Sudan,” the logline reads. “She’s now a single mother to 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel, and is stuck in a state of emotional limbo, raising her children with help from her loyal friends and even her former lover, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).
“Pressured by her Urban Family — including Shazzer (Sally Phillips), Jude (Shirley Henderson) and Tom (James Callis), her work colleague Miranda (Sarah Solemani), her mother (Gemma Jones) and her gynecologist, Dr. Rawlings (Emma Thompson) — to forge a new path toward life and love, Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she’s soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man (The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall),” the logline continues. “Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor).”
The ensemble also includes returning cast member Jim Broadbent as Bridget’s father Colin, and franchise newcomer Isla Fisher as Bridget’s neighbor Rebecca.
